Auto Club Speedway
in Fontana, Calif. Taking place in the beginning or middle of spring each year, the Auto Club 400 is one of the biggest races of the season within the NASCAR Cup Series. The Auto Club 400 is 400 miles of racing, equating to 200 laps and about three hours' worth of race time. Laps and total race time can change somewhat due to things like weather or overtime. Originally, the race, known as the Auto Club 500, spanned 500 miles and around 250 laps, but this changed in 2011 along with the name of the race. Some of the most talented drivers both past and present have driven this historic track and taken home the gold. The Auto Club 400 is always one of the first few races of the Cup Series season. This makes it one of the most-watched and attended races of a given year, fans packing the stands for the chance to cheer on their favorite drivers. The Auto Club Speedway is a D-shaped oval spanning two miles worth of asphalt track with four turns in total. Originally known as the California Speedway, it changed its name in 2008 to coincide with the race's name and sponsor change.
There are many past winners for the Auto Club 400 given how long it has been running. The winner of the very first 1997 race was Jeff Gordon, and he pulled off this feat twice more, in 1999 and 2004. Kyle Busch is also a top contender at the race, having taken first place in 2013, 2014 and 2019. Tony Stewart is also a champion after winning the 2012 race.
As one of the biggest race days for the Southern California area, the Auto Club 400 draws large crowds each time it occurs. Even beyond the race, you'll still find tons of things to do and see, like the historic sports car festival or the hauler parade, not to mention all the tasty food available at the concession stands. There is also the racing school experience, where real professionals teach you the ins and outs of racing both cars and motorcycles. Dedicated fans can also meet the drivers and crews with the pre-race Pit Passes that grant exclusive backstage access.
Tailgating is a big part of the fun each year at the Auto Club Speedway. Tents, grilling, RV camping and more are allowed, assuming you reserve a spot for the camping, at least. Whether you're in the camping area, the parking lot or the exclusive Busch Block Party Zone, you'll have plenty to do and plenty of fellow fans to do it with ahead of and after the Auto Club 400.
