Atreyu started out under the name Retribution, but adopted the name of the hero from The Neverending Story to represent a major change in their musical style. The band's style draws upon metal subgenres to create its distinctive sound, such as classic, Scandinavian and screamo. They add a dash of punk and some hardcore into this mix as well.

Alex Varkatzas, Dan Jacobs, Travis Miguel, Porter McKnight and Brandon Saller self-published their first album Visions in 1998, and worked with the independent music label Tribunal Records on Fractures in the Facade of Your Porcelain Beauty. After catching the attention of Victory Records in 2001, they recorded Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses. They released two more albums during their time at this label: The Curse (2004) and A Death-Grip on Yesterday (2006), which sold more than 450,000 copies.

Atreyu moved to Hollywood Records in 2007 and released Lead Sails Paper Anchor, and Congregation of the Damned. Another label switch occurred in 2015 when the band moved to Spinefarm Records, where they released Long Live.

Atreyu also found fame in some unlikely music venues. Two movies, Underworld: Evolution and Mr. and Mrs. Smith featured the band's music early in their careers. They also created songs for video games, including Madden NFL '07 and Burnout 3.

Atreyu's most successful album is Lead Sails Paper Anchor, which reached No. 8 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the U.S. Hard Rock and U.S. Rock charts. Falling Down is the band's top single, reaching No. 115 on the Billboard 200 and No. 5 on the U.S. rock charts.
