Ashanti Douglas was born in Glen Cove, New York and developed a passion for music early in her life. While she was a child, she sang in her church choir and continued to improve as a singer throughout her early life. With the help of her mother, Ashanti began recording demo tapes when she was a teenager, sending them out to different studios.In high school, she began writing her own songs and continued to perform regularly.

When she was 17-years-old, she had her first major break through in the music industry, when she was discovered by P. Diddy, who wanted her to sign with his label, Bad Boy Records. However, Ashanti ended up signing with Jive Records and later signed a deal with Epic Records. In continued performing local shows and saw her fan base grow. In 2002, she released her debut self titled album, which received great reviews from critics. Since then, Ashanti has released several albums and has become one of the biggest names in r&b. Over the course of her career, Ashanti has released five albums. Her debut release came in 2002 with a self titled album. The album hit No. 1 on the charts in the US and was certified platinum three times. The album features the songs Foolish, Happy and Baby. Foolish spent 10 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The following year, she released Chapter II.
