The Army Black Knights is one of college football's oldest teams. Since the team was founded in 1890, the Army Black Knights has claimed three national titles and won six bowl games. Famous coach Earl Blaik led the team to victory in the 1940s. In the modern day, head coach Jeff Monken is bringing the glory back with a series of bowl wins, championship playoff games and two consecutive years in which the Army Black Knights has held the Commander-in-Chief's trophy. The Army Black Knights' colors, like those of the U.S. Army, are black, gold and gray. Fans sing along to “ ”On, Brave Old Army Team“ ” at nearly every game, and most games are broadcast by the Army Sports Network. The most-attended Army Black Knights games are rivalry matches with the Navy Midshipmen. Enough fans show up that the matches have to be held on neutral territory; the 2018 rivalry game was held at

The Army Black Knights plays its home games at Michie Stadium, which is located on the U.S. Military Academy campus in West Point, N. Y. The stadium was named for David Michie. While Michie was a cadet at the academy, he organized and captained the school's first football team. He was killed in action six years after graduation in 1898. The stadium has a capacity of 38,000; this is far too small to host the large crowds drawn in by rivalry games, so Michie Stadium has only hosted the Navy Midshipmen once in 1943.
The Army Black Knights is an independent team and does not play in any conference. The Black Knights was a member of Conference USA between 1998 and 2004, but the team respectfully returned to its independent status in 2005. Because the Army Black Knights is still an NCAA Division I team, it is eligible to enter bowl championships and frequently plays games with both independent and conference teams across the country.
The Army Black Knights has won five national titles, but it only officially claims three. The two unclaimed titles were earned in 1914 and 1916 under head coach Charles Dudley Daly. All three claimed titles were consecutively earned by head coach Earl Blaik in 1944, 1945 and 1946.
