The American Athletic Conference, also known as The American, started back in 1979 as the Big East Conference. It was originally made up of colleges like Syracuse, Georgetown, St. John’s and Providence. The following year saw the original members joined by the
University of Connecticut
, Boston College, Rutgers and Holy Cross. The conference was largely a basketball conference until 1991 when it began to sponsor football. Between 2010-2013, the conference underwent significant realignment. In recent years, the conference continues to make a name for itself with the help of its athletes. Teams from the conference were able to register top-10 national rankings in basketball, football, baseball and track and field. In its several years of existence, the conference was able to produce four NCAA championship teams, including the University of Connecticut men’s basketball team in 2014 and the women’s basketball team of the same university from 2014-2016. The latter team holds the most trips to the NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Championship with 20 times since 1982. The American Athletic Conference got its name after the original Catholic seven-member universities left the conference during the realignment years.
