The precursor to Amateur Night at The Apollo took place in April of 1933. Actor and producer Ralph Cooper started the original Harlem Amateur Hour at Frank Schiffman’s Lafayette Theater. In 1934, it became Wednesday Amateur Night at Sidney Cohen and Morris Sussman’s 125th Street Apollo Theater. Since then, the interest in the event has not faded, and it celebrates its 85th anniversary in 2019. Part of the interest could come from the allowance for audience participation and the greats who have launched their career here, including
Stevie Wonder
, Michael Jackson, James Brown and
Lauryn Hill
. This event takes place every Wednesday, and auditions are held year-round.

Be Good or Be Gone is the motto of Amateur Night at The Apollo. This event is historic in its own right. Not only has it helped launch careers of musicians who became household names, but it also served as the precursor to shows like
Star Search
and
American Idol
. As it celebrates its 85th anniversary, the event is held at 7:30.m. nearly every Wednesday throughout the year. Eventually, a Super Top Dog competition is held. Ultimately, these events seek to discover and nurture entertainers who have exceptional talent and a firm understanding of the music industry.

'Audience members who attend Amateur Night at The Apollo can expect a fun night out. For the most part, the contestants are truly talented. Plus, those in the audience have the opportunity to participate. The atmosphere still hails back to the 1930s when Vaudeville was all the rage. Keep in mind that 15-year-old Ella Fitzgerald was one of the first winners. When you attend this event, you could very well listen to a future star.'
