Whether he's explaining the chemistry behind smoke rings in barbecued meats or demonstrating how to make the perfect grilled cheese sandwich, Alton Brown is one part cook, one part mad scientist and all parts entertainer. His classic Food Network show

Good Eats

combines technique, history, comedy and an absolute hatred of unitasker kitchen implements to break down classic dishes for the home cook. He is also a successful author, with books ranging from appliance reviews to motorcycle road trips and, in addition to

Good Eats

, has hosted other Food Network hits such as

Iron Chef America

and

Cutthroat Kitchen

. Audiences flocked to see him on his

Eat Your Science

tour in 2017, so you won't want to miss it when he comes back to your city.

Alton Brown grew up in Georgia, where he developed his love of film. He studied at the University of Georgia, then went on to pursue a career as a video director and cinematographer, most notably serving as the director of photography for R.E.M's classic video, The One I Love. He often watched television cooking shows and believed that he could do better, leading him to head to Vermont to train at the New England Culinary Institute, graduating from there in 1997. He came up with the idea of

Good Eats

shortly thereafter, inspired by the idea of a combination of Julia Child and Monty Python. He composed the theme and incidental music as well, and after the pilot was shown on a Chicago TV station, it was picked up by Food Network in 1999. It became a signature show for Food Network with its humor, zany cast of characters (including Brown's sister), common-sense recipes and informative breakdowns on cooking techniques and equipment. The original show, which ran until 2011, won a Peabody award and a James Beard award. It remained so popular in reruns that a reboot called

Good Eats: The Return

premiered on Food Network in August 2019.
