Baseball became a sport at the University of Alabama with the launch of the Crimson Tide all the way back in 1892. In the nearly 130 years since then, the team has won more than 2600 games. To date, Alabama has appeared in the postseason an impressive 28 times, including five trips to Omaha for the College World Series. The 1997 team that made it to Omaha is widely considered to be the best baseball team the Crimson Tide ever put on the field. Jim Wells had led the Tide to the World Series in 1996 and fell just short. With much of that team returning in 1997, Alabama was in a great position to make a deep run. Though the Crimson Tide put up a remarkable 56-14 record, the team fell one game short of clinching a World Series title due to injuries, losing to LSU. Today, the team is still trying to achieve what legends of yesterday failed to do. Brad Bohannon became the 32nd head coach in the history of Alabama Crimson Tide baseball on June 1, 2017. Alabama is Bohannon's first stint as a head coach but he has a long and impressive history as an assistant coach in the SEC. Initially, an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the
University of Kentucky Wildcats
, Bohannon has an established reputation as an elite recruiter. While at Kentucky, Bohannon was responsible for signing 13 Wildcat student-athletes that went on to play in the Major Leagues, including 2014 Golden Spikes Award winner A.J. Reed. His recruiting prowess continued when he moved on to
Auburn University
where he immediately landed a top 10 recruiting class. Before coming to Alabama, none of Bohannon's recruiting classes had ever been ranked lower than 25th. It's also worth noting that Bohannon has recruited players from 25 different states as well as Canada. Three of those recruits have been taken in the first round of the MLB draft.
Often referred to as The Joe, Sewell-Thomas Stadium has been the home to the Alabama Crimson Tide baseball team since 1948. In 1948 the stadium could only hold 2000 fans and was known as Thomas Field. In 1978 the stadium was renamed to Sewell-Thomas Stadium as a nod to Alabama alumni Joe Sewell who went on to have a Hall of Fame career as a member of both the Cleveland Indians and the New York Yankees. Tuscaloosa's love of Joe Sewell is why fans refer to the stadium today as The Joe. The stadium has undergone many renovations over the years but none were as expansive as the one performed in 2015. That year saw the Tide play their home games at Hoover's Metropolitan Stadium, 40 miles away from campus. The Joe has hosted the NCAA regional tournament six times and the team used the home-field advantage of Sewell-Thomas Stadium to propel themselves to College World Series appearances in 1996, 1997 and 1998.
The Crimson Tide's most heated rivalry in every sport is the intrastate Auburn University Tigers. Not only do the two teams battle for supremacy in Alabama, but they are both members of the SEC West. Alabama and Auburn have played one another in baseball since 1896 and the rivalry has seen Alabama establish a slight lead in the series.
