The Afropunk Festival is an annual festival that is designed to showcase art, fashion, food and music by African American designers, artists and musicians. The successful festival has been running since 2005 and has grown to be one of the biggest events of its kind. Originally, the event was designed to showcase African-American musicians in the rock scene. Since its beginnings, the event has expanded to include performances by artists from all genres of music. The event has also spread to multiple cities around the US and internationally in recent years thanks to its success in New York City.
The inspiration for Afropunk came from the documentary Afro-punk which showcased black punk rock artists in the US. This inspired the event organizers to create an event that would showcase these kinds of artists all in one place. For the first three years, the festival was free and held in Brooklyn at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. New management took over in 2009 and sought to expand the event, leading to what is today a 60,000-person event that is held over multiple days at Commodore Perry Park in Brooklyn, N.Y. The event is now also held in other cities, including Johannesburg, South Africa, London, England, Paris, France, and Atlanta, Ga.

The most recent Afropunk Festival featured some of the most important musical artists in the festival circuit. This Brooklyn event included electrifying performances by Jill Scott, Kamasi Washington and Leon Bridges. On top of bands, there was a wide variety of DJs, including Soulection, Bambii and MikeQ.
Afropunk 2020 has not yet been announced. Typically, the event happens in one of the last weekends of August. Soon after they announce the date of the event, promoters will release the full lineup for Afropunk 2020, and you will be able to find the best tickets at StubHub.
Throughout the festival's evolution, many notable performers have graced its stage. This includes a performance by
D'Angelo
at Afropunk Fest 2014 during his comeback tour to support his new album,
Black Messiah
. Other notable performers in the past include
Tyler the Creator
,
Lauryn Hill
and Gary Clark Jr.
Because the event is held multiple times a year in different cities around the world, the stage layout is different for each one. Each location's stages also change each year. In 2018, the Brooklyn location had the main stage and side stages where undercard bands and DJs played. There are also stages and runways for fashion designers.
You can purchase Afropunk tickets in either a single-day or a multi-day format. The event is shut down each night at the end of the last performance. Single-day tickets can be purchased for either day of the event.
With your Afropunk Festival tickets, you will also have access to all of the attractions in the event. This includes Solution Sessions, a series of speakers taking place all weekend where talks are given on various social issues that need to be addressed. The sessions seek to find answers to real-world problems.
