The Atlantic Coast Conference is one of the premier conferences in Division I college basketball. Established in 1953, with the first tournament held in 1954, the ACC now comprises 15 teams. Most are located across the East Coast from Florida to Massachusetts. The only non-East Coast schools are the
Louisville Cardinals
and the
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
, both of which were added with conference expansion in 2013 and 2014 to counter the loss of
Maryland
to the Big Ten. Led by
Duke
and
North Carolina
, ACC schools have combined to win at least 15 national championships. The ACC Tournament is held at the end of every season. For five days, the conference teams compete in a single-elimination format for a chance at an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament regardless of their regular season record. The ACC Tournament features all 15 teams from the conference. They are seeded based on their regular season conference record. Secondary statistics like head-to-head record are used to determine seeding in case of a tie.
To fit all 15 teams into the bracket, the ACC Tournament features a highly unusual five-round structure. In the first round, the bottom six seeds all match up against each other while the top nine seeds receive a bye. The 12 seed plays the 13 seed, the 10 seed plays the 15 seed and the 11 seed plays the 14 seed. The three victorious teams then move on to the second round and play the fifth seed, the seventh seed and the sixth seed, respectively. The eighth seed also matches up against the ninth seed. Four winners emerge from this round and move on to play the top four seeds in the quarterfinals. The tournament then proceeds as normal through the semifinals and title game to determine the ACC champion. All games are single elimination. There is no consolation bracket.
The 2020 ACC Tournament schedule is set for March 10-14, 2020, between the end of the regular season and the beginning of the NCAA Tournament. The first few rounds of the tournament include two sessions spread out over the day. The semifinals and the finals are held in single sessions only.
The 2020 ACC Tournament will be held at the
Greensboro Coliseum Complex
in Greensboro, North Carolina. The 22,000-seat coliseum is the home of the
UNC Greensboro Spartans
. It also has a long history of hosting the ACC Tournament, NCAA Tournament games and music concerts. Future sites of the tournament include the
Capital One Arena
(home of the
Washington Wizards
) in 2021 and
Barclays Center
(home of the
Brooklyn Nets
and
New York Islanders
) in 2022. The state-of-the-art Barclays Center with its modern amenities and services was the site of the 2017 and 2018 tournaments.
In the 2019 ACC Tournament, No. 3 seed Duke beat No. 4 seed
Florida State
by a score of 73-63. On the way to the title game, Florida State upset eventual national champion
Virginia
in the semifinals of the tournament. Previous winners have included Virginia in 2018 and 2014, Duke again in 2017, North Carolina in 2016, Notre Dame in 2015,
Miami
in 2013 and Florida State in 2012. Before then, Duke and UNC dominated almost every year of the tournament in the 21st century with the exception of Maryland in 2004.
