As a classic Children's story,

A Christmas Carol

was destined to become a much-loved musical. The stage play opened at

Madison Square Garden's

Paramount Theatre on December 1, 1994 and ran for 71 performances before closing on January 1,1995. Based on the story by Charles Dickens,

A Christmas Carol

was promoted as a one-act musical with 14 scenes. The story has been made into a movie several times and in many ways, with legendary performers playing the part of Ebenezer Scrooge. The story has been recreated as everything from a comedy and a cartoon to a movie starring puppets, and of course, many times as a dramatic movie.

'A Story That Began as Public Criticism Becomes a Favorite Children's Tale'

'It started as a brochure to reprimand government officials for the way they treated the local citizens. By the time the author was finished, it had become a full-fledged story that would grow to become a children's classic tale. The original title of the pamphlet was, An Appeal to the People of England on Behalf of the Poor Man's Child. The story was inspired by a government report the author read on the United Kingdom's child labor policies. Charles Dickens interviewed several children for background on the story.'

The stage also features the simple furnishings of the times, along with decor of the counting house and other locations described in the story.
