Written by Charles Dickens, this novella was published in London in 1843. As one of the most well-known and most beloved Christmas stories in history, A Christmas Carol broke records with instant success and critical praise.

The story follows wealthy Ebenezer Scrooge, a cantankerous, mean-spirited old man, as he transforms into a kinder, generous person. In the course of one night—throughout an intense and eye-opening experience with his previous business partner Jacob Marley and the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future—Scrooge learns to soften his demeanor, appreciate life for all it’s worth and understand that friends and family are more important than the money lining one’s pocket.

'The Zach Theatre Adaptation'

Based both on Dickens’ version and other inspirations by the preceding director, Dave Steakley, the Zach Theatre’s show, A Christmas Carol: A Rockin’ Family Musical is adapted to stage a “multi-cultural, musicalized version.” This is an annual performance that’s re-adapted every year to feature new music, re-imagined carols and modern, contemporary story-telling. With a traditional Victorian setting and costumes contrasted with up-to-date and current music, the Zach Theatre’s revision is a family-friendly, fun and enjoyable affair.

In recent seasons, A Christmas Carol starred both Harvey Guion and Marco Perella as Scrooge, Paul Sanchez as Bob Cratchit and Roderick Sanford as the ghost of Marley. The director, Dave Steakley, described his wish to “create an inclusive version of this beautiful story specifically for Austin families that reflected community and values.”

A Christmas Carol: A Rockin’ Family Musical is being shown at the Zach Theatre in Austin, Texas. Located at 202 S. Lamar Blvd, this theater is known as “Austin’s liveliest and most polished professional theater.” Built in 1932, it is not only one of the top ten oldest theaters in the U.S. but also one of the longest-running theater companies in Texas. Furthermore, the Zach Theater is a non-profit organization and wishes to “entertain, inspire and engage the community.”
