The construction of the arena was put in motion by Ted Turner who at the time owned the Atlanta Hawks. Turner's main goal in building the arena was not just to give the Hawks a new home but also to build a state of the art multi-sport arena in order to lure an NHL team back to the Atlanta area. He was successful in that goal in that the Thrashers soon arrived in Atlanta in 1999 although the team moved to Winnipeg in 2011.
