'Music Box opened in September 2015 in a building that had previously been occupied by another concert and restaurant venue, Anthology. Its first show, hosted on September 17th, featured the talents of Whiskey Myers, a Texas bluegrass band. It was followed on the 18th and 19th by performances by locally born singer Julieta Venegas, a Grammy Award winner.'

Music Box hosts a rotating cast of performers, bringing in established national acts in addition to supporting local performers who are growing their musical careers. Past performers at the Music Box include the likes of Snow Tha Product, Of Montreal, Ozomatli, Justin Martin, Rufus du Sol, Mura Masa and many more. It also hosts a strong rotation of cover bands, including the Winehouse Experience, the Red Not Chili Peppers, Fooz Fighters, One More Time and The Dave Matthews Experience. On occasion, Music Box also hosts special events such as the San Diego Film Awards.

With a capacity of 800 and 13,000 square feet to work with, Music Box is large, yet feels cozy with its layout across three floors opening into the broader venue space. The main bottom floor where the stage is features standing room only, while the mezzanine level offers five opera box-style booths. These booths, which can fit six to eight people each, require reservations and offer bottle service and excellent views of the stage. The top level features a lounge, tables, an outdoor patio and an elaborate music-themed mural by a local artist. The venue also offers a private VIP room.
Music Box has fantastic acoustics and offers a small but delicious menu full of locally sourced crowd-pleasers like chicken wings, tacos, sliders and more.
