Washington State’s football history dates back to its foundation in 1894 when the football team was still an independent program. In 1916, Washington State played in the second ever

Rose Bowl

game, beating the Brown Bruins by a score of 14-0. A year later, the school joined the Pacific Coast Conference, a progenitor to the Pacific Athletic Association, which it would later join in 1962. With the arrival of Mike Price in 1989, Washington State rose to national prominence. His teams won the conference title in 1997 and 2002, earning a Rose Bowl berth both years. In 2018, head coach Mike Leach finished with one of the most impressive seasons in school history. His team won 11 games, a Cougar record, made the Pac-12 championship game and finished No. 10 in both the AP and Coaches rankings.
