Video Games Live was conceived in 2002 by gaming composers Tommy Tallarico and Jack Wall. The founders' desire to bring video game soundtracks to the stage represents a greater mission to support and promote the art of video game music, to introduce a new generation to orchestral music and to offer a unique entertainment experience that's equally enjoyable for gamers and non-gamers alike. Three years of planning led to the first Video Games Live concert in 2005, when the Los Angeles Philharmonic performed in front of 11,000 people at the Hollywood Bowl. At the time it was the biggest video game concert in the world, and was soon followed by the first-ever such shows in Canada, Europe, New Zealand, South America and Asia.
Today, Video Games Live features more than 70 shows a year, continuing its quest to bring the music of video games, from early classics like Pong and Tetris to modern favorites such as Medal of Honor and World of Warcraft, to major venues across the world. Five albums of music from the show have been released, as well as DVD and Blu-ray offerings. Video Games Live: Level 2, released in 2010, debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard charts. A 2010 live show in New Orleans was taped and broadcast on PBS.
''All Video Games Live ticket holders are invited to enjoy a pre-concert festival that features interactive game demos, costume contests, gaming competitions and giveaways, as well as meet-and-greet events with game composers and designers. The 2.5-hour show features different music every night, but especially popular segments, such as Mario, Halo, Zelda and Final Fantasy, are typically played nightly, as is a classic arcade game medley. Concerts are performed by local symphonic orchestras, led by conductor Emmanuel Fratianni. Audience participation is another fun feature of Video Games Live - audience members are invited to come on stage and play classic games like Donkey Kong, Guitar Hero and Frogger, while the orchestra plays music to match the game.'
