Vanessa Williams was born in the Bronx, N.Y., and was dedicated throughout her childhood and adolescence to dance, theater arts and music. She mastered the violin, piano and French horn and dreamed of joining the Rockettes. Williams' path to fame took a sojourn into the world of beauty pageants, culminating in her becoming the first African-American Miss America.
Williams was a backup singer for George Clinton on his 1986 album R&B Skeletons in the Closet, and in 1988 she released her own debut album, The Right Stuff. It was a huge success, being certified platinum and spawning three Top 10 singles--Dreamin, The Right Stuff and He's Got the Look. Williams was awarded the NAACP's Best New Female Artist award and was nominated for three Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist. Her second album, The Comfort Zone, went triple-platinum with sales propelled by the hit single Save the Best for Last. That song went to No. 1 for five weeks on the pop charts; was a huge hit in the UK, Japan, Canada and Australia; and earned Williams five more Grammy nominations. Other career highlights include the hit duet with Brian McKnight, Love Is, and two more Grammy nods for her platinum-selling third album, The Sweetest Days. Williams sang the Academy Award-winning theme to Disney's Pocahontas, Colors of the Wind.
