Umphrey's McGee actually began as two different bands. The local Notre Dame rock bands Tashi Station and Stomper Bob came together and created Umphrey's McGee in 1997. The group began as a cover band performing songs such as Patience by Guns N' Roses as well as songs by bands like
Phish
and
The Grateful Dead
. While it had its start playing at fraternity houses at the University of Notre Dame as well as at bars and other venues surrounding the campus, the band managed to develop a devoted fan following. It has had four albums make it onto the
Billboard
Hot 200 list. While Umphrey's McGee is primarily known as a rock band, the group has dabbled with many different musical genres such as folk, bluegrass, electronic, reggae, blues, jazz, funk and metal.
''Umphrey's McGee is known for having improvisational jam sessions during its shows that it refers to as Stewarts. This odd name came from a night the group had played at a wedding, and afterward, it went down to the hotel basement into a room called the Jimmy Stewart Room. The band members had drunk some alcohol and were feeling pretty good, leading to eventually recording an impromptu jam session in that room. The band enjoyed the musical sound it created and the experience of the improvisation, so it co-opted the name and began incorporating Stewarts in between songs sets as well as between verses during its live shows. Some of these sessions have even ended up on albums.'

'Since Umphrey's McGee's shows are so long, the group often has two sets and an encore. In the first setlist, you can expect to hear Gurgle, Resolution, Believe the Lie, Tomorrow Never Knows and Miami Virtue. During the second set, the band is likely to throw a cover song in such as Led Zepplin's Good Times, Bad Times. The group also performs songs like Women, Wine, and Song, All in Time and Wife Soup. For the encore, you can expect the band to play Puppet String.'
'Umphrey's McGee includes Brendan Bayliss on guitar and vocals, Joel Cummins on keyboards and vocals, Ryan Stasik on bass guitar, Andy Frag on percussion, Jake Cinninger on guitar and vocals, and Kris Myers on drums and vocals. The newest member, Jake Cinniger, joined the band in 2000, while original band member Mike Mirro is still with the group today. Although the band almost dissolved in 2002, it is still providing engaging entertainment for its fans.'
'The band's name Umphrey's McGee is actually based on a real person. Brendan Bayliss has a cousin whose name is Humphrey Magee, and the band made some minor changes to it to claim it as its own.'
