The Decemberists was formed in 2000 and released its first album,

in 2001. Colin Meloy was a member of Tarkio while living in Montana but left the band when he moved to Portland. He met Chris Funk, who was a fan of Tarkio. Meloy also met Nate Query and Jenny Conlee, who had been members of

Calobo

. The three individuals came together to create The Decemberists with Ezra Holbrook as their drummer. Throughout the course of their music career, The band members went through two drummer changes: Rachel Blumberg and John Moen (current drummer). The Decemberists takes its name from the 1825 Decembrist revolt in Russia. Meloy says the band name also represents drama and melancholy.

Picaresque

was the band's first album to rank on the

Billboard

200 at No. 128. It also reached No. 5 on the
