Arcade Fire is an indie rock band hailing from Montreal, Canada. Frontman Win Butler teamed up with his wife, Régine Chassagne, and his brother, Will Butler, as well as Richard Reed Parry, Tim Kingsbury and Jeremy Gara to release their debut album,
Funeral,
in 2004. This freshmen effort is best known for the sweeping anthem Wake Up (which has been featured in several commercials and film trailers) and the toe-tappers like the multi-part Neighborhood. Since then, they've released four more albums, most recently, in 2017,
Everything Now
. Career accolades include Grammy nominations for Best Alternative Rock Album (for all five records), a 2011 Grammy award for Album of the Year for
The Suburbs
, released in 2010, and multiple shortlist nominations for the Polaris Music Prize. They've also built a strong reputation for their grand, sweeping and emotional shows that fill the stage with a variety of musicians.
While Arcade Fire was recording their first album, several of its members were dealing with the deaths of close family members, including the Butler brothers' grandfather. These experiences inspired the album's title and lent a somber note to some of its tracks, but the result was popular nonetheless. The band's 2007 follow-up,
Neon Bible,
was greeted with anticipation and, ultimately, success, with one
Trouser Press
writer touting the album as among the best indie rock recordings of all time. British rock singer
David Bowie
contributed to the title track on their fourth studio album, Reflektor, released in 2013, and the band headlined the
Glastonbury Festival
in June of that year.
Will Butler
branched out to release a solo effort in 2015, but he returned to Arcade Fire for the band's fifth album,
Everything Now,
which bowed in the summer of 2017.

Theatricality is often the name of the game at an Arcade Fire show. For the band's Reflektor tour, a man dressed from head to toe in tiny mirrors (reminiscent of a disco ball) made frequent appearances in the audience. During Here Comes the Night Time, a two-part staple of
Reflektor
, audiences were showered with a multitude of brightly colored confetti. The band members enjoy interacting with the crowd and appreciate fan enthusiasm, so come prepared to sing and dance along.
The band will typically cover all of the hits from its most recent album, and most of the B-side tunes to boot. Earlier hits are given equal billing, with Wake Up, Intervention, Black Mirror and The Suburbs making frequent appearances.
Unless there's an opening act, you can expect the show to last for about 90 minutes from start to finish. As their discography expands, it's possible that their live performances will see a corresponding increase in length.
In addition to the Butler brothers, Chassagne, Parry, Kingsbury and Gara, the band is often joined on tour by a few other backup members. Currently, these include Sarah Neufeld on violin, piano and backing vocals; Tiwill Duprate on percussion and Stuart Bogie on saxophone, clarinet, flute and keyboard.
There are no Arcade Fire tour dates announced for 2019.
