The String Cheese Incident
String Cheese Incident is a jam band from Colorado. In 2019, the group celebrated its 25-year anniversary as a band. The band originally formed in the early '90s in Crested Butte, Colo. The members met when working and skiing in the small town. While String Cheese Incident originally started as a bluegrass-influenced band, it is well known today for its eclectic music that touches on almost every genre, even dubstep. The band self-releases albums under its record label, SCI Fidelity. The group's first album was
Born On the Wrong Planet.
Although the band started with five members, it later expanded to become a six-member group with the addition of percussionist Jason Hann in 2004.
The String Cheese Incident is known for including impressive stage productions and effects that often spill out into the crowd. Usually, these occur during the band's themed events at special nights or the festivals it headlines like Hulaween and the Electric Forest Music Festival. These themes have centered around outer space, disco days, video games and more. Fans know that they are going to get an experience that affects the entirety of their senses when they attend a String Cheese Incident concert.

The String Cheese Incident is a six-piece band, including Michael Travis (drums), Jason Hann (percussion), Michael Kang (fiddle, mandolin, guitar and vocals), Kyle Hollingsworth (keyboards, accordion and vocals), Keith Mosley (bass guitar) and Bill Nershi (acoustic guitar and vocals). The original members include Travis, Nershi, Mosley and Kang. The band has had the same lineup since Hann joined the band in 2004, making it one of the most stable groups on the jam band scene.
The one thing fans know they can expect from a String Cheese Incident concert is the unexpected. The band has a massive catalog of songs thanks to its multiple albums released over its two-and-a-half-decade career. During the two-set shows, you will hear a wide selection of original songs and surprising covers. In addition, the band puts a lot of effort into the production and special effects during its shows for an added entertainment benefit for its fans.
During the band's career, it has released 10 albums. These include
Born on the Wrong Planet,
A String Cheese Incident,
Round the Wheel,
Breathe,
Carnival '99,
Outside Inside,
Untying the Not,
One Step Closer,
A Song in My Head
and
Believe
. Its album
Breathe
was a collaborative effort with singer-songwriter Keller Williams. The String Cheese Incident performed the album in its entirety with Keller Williams for its 20th anniversary on the second night of the band's 2019 Red Rocks run.
The String Cheese Incident still tours, just not as aggressively as it has in the past. During the summer, the String Cheese Incident fills its tours with multi-night runs at massive festivals like Hulaween and the
Electric Forest Music Festival
. The band also performs a three-night run at Red Rocks Amphitheater each summer. Other theater and amphitheater dates on the String Cheese Incident tour schedule include stops at the
Iroquois Amphitheater
in Louisville, Ky., and a multi-night run at
The Fillmore
in San Francisco.
