Transitioning from the leader of one of the best indie rock bands of the 1990s to a successful new project is no easy feat, but Stephen Malkmus pulled it off. Malkmus was the lead singer and guitarist of Pavement, a beloved band in indie and alternative rock circles. When Pavement broke up, Malkmus was by no means done making music. His work with Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks lives up to the standard set by Pavement.
Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks started in 2000, shortly after the dissolution of Pavement. Jicks enlisted John Moen, Heather Larimer and Joanna Bolme for his self-titled solo album, which is the only Jicks album to not have the band's name included alongside Malkmus'. The album, released in 2001, was very well received. Publications who praised it included
Pitchfork, Entertainment Weekly, The Village Voice
and
AllMusic
. It showed that Malkmus could go in a different direction than Pavement with storytelling songs like The Hook and Jenny and the Ess-Dog. Additional praise came for the band's followup,
Pig Lib
. This album had something of a more casual feel in terms of how songs wandered in different directions. The next album,
Face the Truth
, didn't have as much band involvement as its predecessors. However, it was still very well-received, receiving the Best New Music designation from
Pitchfork
. In 2008, the band released
Real Emotional Trash
, its first album with Janet Weiss, of Sleater-Kinney fame, on drums. This album went in an exciting direction, with lengthier songs like the title track and Hopscotch Willie. Shortly after, Malkmus and Pavement reunited, touring around the world. However, The Jicks band was not put on the shelf. In 2011, the band released
Mirror Traffic
, which was produced by Beck and was the last with Weiss. The band followed this up with
Wig Out at Jagbags
in 2014 and
Sparkle Hard
in 2018. Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks has appeared at many music festivals and has performed on
The Late Show with David Letterman
.
