First held in 2008 at Tropicana Field, the St. Petersburg Bowl is one of the newest post-season bowl games on the schedule, and it's fast becoming a fan favorite. Each year, this game sees teams from the American Athletic Conference face off against foes from the ACC or Conference USA. At times, teams have been invited from the Sun Belt and Mid-American conferences due to a lack of bowl-eligible teams from the ACC and C-USA. Marshall and the University of Central Florida have made the most appearances at this bowl so far. They're tied at three appearances each. Over the years, this game has been sponsored by magicJack, Bitcoin and Beef O'Brady's. The game moved to the Tampa Bay area for 2018, where it became known as the Gasparilla Bowl after the legendary Florida pirate Jose Gaspar. In 2018, the game was played in the Tampa Bay area at Raymond James Stadium. In previous years, it was played at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. Raymond James Stadium is an NFL stadium, hosting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for all of their home games. It has a seating capacity of over 65,000 and can be expanded to 75,000 for special events. The 2015 St. Petersburg Bowl saw Marshall face off against Connecticut in a tight game. Marshall took the bowl, winning 16-10. The following year featured a result with an even closer score. Mississippi State defeated Miami University of Ohio 17 to 16.
