About Presidents of the United States of America

Hailing from the beautiful and green wonderland of Seattle, Washington, the Presidents of the United States of America became an official rocking entity in 1993. Always a three man group, Presidents of the United States of America today consists of Chris Ballew slapping the bass, Jason Finn on percussion and Andrew McKeag on guitar. Formerly, founding member Dave Dederer was a group member but would depart after more than a decade of writing, recording, and touring with the band.

The band would form as the unassuming side project of Ballew and Dederer while attending school in Seattle. The two had already been experimenting with various elements of the Seattle music scene, dabbling in everything that had come from the 80s and all that was still being shaped into the 90s, including the punk, post punk, and grunge movements. The duo would play without a drummer for the greater part of 1993, eventually picking up Jason Finn to round out the group and begin their first serious recordings.

Seattle music watchers would be quick to notice the band, with the label PopLlama fostering the band in their earliest days and supporting them for the release of their debut album in 1994. The album would propel the band to fame, receiving both critical and commercial success relative to the band's popularity at the time. The band would quickly launch into global tours hitting multiple continents, and make the rounds on the late night TV circuit including performances on Jay Leno and Dave Letterman. The band would even get invited to play on SNL and would make a special guest spot on MAD TV.

The band would take a temporary hiatus in 1998 as members cited concerns for spending time with family members, with all members parting ways amicably. Their work would leave a lasting impression in 1990s Americana, being featured in the hit film The Wedding Singer and a track becoming the theme song for the Drew Carey Show. Eventually the band would reform in 2000, continue to put out hit album after hit album that would make them a permanent fixture on the music scene through the turn of the millennium and up into today.

Previous Hits

The band's debut self titled album would contain a medley of mega-hits, with the tracks Lump and Peaches receiving widespread airplay and fan recognition. Lump would go on to become one of the most iconic sounds of the 90s, and is possibly their best known song to date. The band's follow up, titled just II, would be a critical success and go gold, but would not be as successful as the bands former eponymous album.

Before the band's first breakup in 1998, the band released Pure Frosting, which would be a fitting farewell as a critically and commercial success for the band. Tracks from the album would be included in hit films My Date with the President's Daughter and the 1997 adaptation of George of the Jungle.

Once the band reformed in 200, they released the single Jupiter which would pave the way for a new album, Freaked Out & Small. Building on the momentum of a comeback, Presidents of the United States of America exploded back onto the scene with Love Everybody, cementing them as performers with appeal throughout multiple decades and assuring fans that they were here to stay.

Fitting to the band's name, the guys have performed for at multiple political functions. This includes fundraisers for Bill Clinton in the lead up to his second presidential bid, and for John Kerry during his unsuccessful campaign against George W. Bush.

The band doesn't play traditional instruments, instead choosing to utilize modified instruments that give them a wider range of sounds. They dub these instruments the basitar and the guitbass.
