''In 1890, when the University of Pittsburgh was still known as Western University of Pennsylvania, the team played its first official game against the Allegheny Athletic Association; Pitt lost 38-0. The Pittsburgh Panthers football program gained national notoriety when Glenn Scobey “Pop” Warner took over as coach in 1914. Pop Warner led the Panthers to three of the school's nine national championships. The team's last national championship was under coach Johnny Majors in 1976. Pitt has taken two conference championships, and it won the ACC division in 2018. The team has played in 34 bowl games since playing in the Rose Bowl in 1927. Nineteen Panther players and four coaches have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, and Pitt has sent 289 players to the NFL. A Pitt alum has played in the NFL's Pro Bowl every year since 1981. Grab your Pittsburgh Panthers football tickets at StubHub to experience top-notch collegiate gridiron action.'
'Junior Kenny Pickett is Pitt’s starting quarterback. In 2018, Pickett played all 14 games, completing 180 passes for 1,969 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was named ACC Quarterback of the Week after his performance in the Wake Forest game. AJ Davis and V’lique Carter should be the lead backs on the 2019 Panthers team.'
'A Pittsburgh Panthers game day is full of traditions from the rubbing of the Millennium Panther’s nose for luck before the game to the lighting of the Cathedral of Learning after a win. Fans line the streets to greet the team on the Panther Prowl. Students carry the 50-yard long Hail to Pitt Flag onto the field at Heinz and then form a tunnel to cheer the Panthers as the squad enters the stadium. When the team moves into the red zone, giant Heinz Ketchup bottles flood the scoreboards with electronic ketchup. Be prepared to sing “Sweet Caroline” along with the University of Pittsburgh Varsity Marching Band.'
'Students gather to tailgate on the Great Lawn near Gate A of Heinz Field. The party includes live DJs and performances by the University of Pittsburgh Varsity Marching Band and Pitt cheerleaders. Alums and die-hard fans usually set up camp in the Blue and Gravel lots.'
'Mike Ditka, Tony Dorsett and Dan Marino are three former Pittsburgh Panthers who had storied careers in the NFL. Ditka is a Super Bowl winner both as a player and a coach. Tony Dorsett won the Heisman Trophy at Pitt and was the 1977 NFL Rookie of the Year. Marino was the Miami Dolphins quarterback for 17 seasons.'

One of the most memorable games the Pittsburgh Panthers played in Heinz Field was the
Virginia Tech
game in 2003. Pitt wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald caught his 17th touchdown of the season and his NCAA record 15th touchdown in consecutive games. With a little more than four minutes to go in the game, Pitt was down 28-24. Fitzgerald caught three passes from Pitt quarterback Rod Rutherford, and Lousaka Polite carried the ball over the line for the win.
''The Pittsburgh Panthers finished the 2018 season with a 7-7 overall record, but the team's 6-2 record in division play earned the squad the ACC title for the first time. Pitt played Stanford in the Sun Bowl and lost 14-13.'
