While honing his live performance skills in Nashville, Phil Vassar found his earliest successes as a songwriter, first drawing the attention of classic crooner Engelbert Humperdinck, who recorded his song Once in a While. Vassar is also the songwriting talent behind the hit singles For a Little While by Tim McGraw, Bye Bye and I'm Alright by Jo Dee Messina and Right on the Money by Alan Jackson, as well as many other songs performed by big-name country stars. In 1999, Vassar was awarded Country Songwriter of the Year by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Vassar released his self-titled debut album in 2000. The single Carlene reached the Top 5 on the country charts, an achievement Vassar surpassed when his next single, Just Another Day in Paradise, rose to No. 1. Two more singles from Phil Vassar, Six Pack Summer and That's When I Love You, would also make the Top 10, and the album was later certified gold.

Vassar's sophomore album, American Child, was issued in 2002 and yielded the singer another Top 5 single with its title track.

In 2006 came a landmark of career longevity when Vassar offered his Greatest Hits, Vol. 1, featuring his biggest songs, some new tracks and versions of his own songs made famous by other artists. It reached No. 2 on the country albums chart. Vassar followed up in 2008 with the piano-heavy, Bob Seeger-inspired Prayer of a Common Man, which spawned a No. 2 hit single Love is a Beautiful Thing. In 2016, Vassar released his sixth studio album, American Soul.
