Northwestern University introduced football in 1876 during a game between the Chicago Football Club and the students of Northwestern. The love of football continued to grow on campus, although there was not an organized league at the time. The school's first intercollegiate game was held in 1882 against Lake Forest. Nearly a decade later, Northwestern built Sheppard Field for the football team. As the number of Wildcats fans continued to grow, the team began playing at Ryan Field to accommodate visitors better. The Northwestern Wildcats had great success after becoming a charter member of the Western Conference in 1896 as they finished second to the Wisconsin team. The Wildcats' biggest rival is the
