The New Mexico State Aggies had an early game against the
Lobos
in 1894. This match would be the precursor to a rivalry between the two teams that still exists today. Former coach R. R. Brown helped the Aggies gain an early undefeated season in 1923 with nine wins. In 1958, future Warren Woodson — who would later get a spot in the College Football Hall of Fame — began to coach the New Mexico Aggies. He helped the team beat rivals
North Texas State
and take home a win from the
Sun Bowl
in 1959. Since Woodson, the Aggies experienced decades of minor wins that resulted in only four successful seasons, but the team is on its way to improving with the help of current coach Doug Martin. Aggie Memorial Stadium is the outdoor football arena where the players make it home. It opened in 1978 and can seat 30,343 fans. The unique design courtesy of a New Mexico alumnus gives the stadium two levels. Excavated earth from the lower one offers support to the upper area. The location also serves to host concerts and other functions for the university.
Although the New Mexico State Aggies have been members of conferences in the past, the team is currently independents playing in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Its most recent conference affiliates decided not to continue football as part of the program after 2012. The Aggies did make a single reappearance as part of the
Sun Belt Conference
in 2014.
The New Mexico State Aggies' schedule starts Aug. 31, and it already has several games lined up for the fans. The Aggies will start things off by facing the
Washington State Cougars
at an away game.
Doug Martin leads the New Mexico State Aggies at present. He has held this position since 2013. Martin has extensive head coaching experience going back to 2004. He has also put his skills to use training former assistant coaches who went to other universities to lead their own teams.
The New Mexico State Aggies had a bit of a rough year in 2018. The team played as independents since 2012 and did not have a conference score. At home, the Aggies won three games and lost nine. Fans are hoping that the team can turn things around for the 2019 season.
Despite not being members of a conference, the New Mexico State Aggies still have a longstanding rivalry with New Mexico. By most accounts, it is clear that New Mexico defeated New Mexico State during the first historic match in 1894. However, some records disagree on the exact score. New Mexico believes it won with a final score of 25 in its favor. The Aggies claim that its rivals only scored 18 points.
