The New Mexico Bowl takes place each year at the Dreamstyle Stadium on the University of New Mexico campus in Albuquerque.
Dreamstyle Stadium opened in September 1960 and has a seating capacity of more than 39,000. Oriented in the traditional north-south direction, the stadium features synthetic turf and a state-of-the-art sound system. The winning New Mexico Bowl team takes home the 20-inch Zia trophy, which is a hand-crafted piece of Pueblo pottery bearing the logos of the New Mexico Bowl and of the two opposing teams.
From 2006 to 2009, the New Mexico Bowl game has been played by a team from the Mountain West Conference (MWC) versus a team from the Western Athletic Conference. In 2010 and 2011, MWC was opposed by Conference USA (C-USA) and the Mid-American Conference, respectively. In 2012 and 2013, MWC was challenged by the PAC-12 Conference. C-USA signed a contract in 2014, designating its team as the New Mexico Bowl challenger for the next six years. The New Mexico Bowl matchup, thus, features teams from MWC and C-USA, an arrangement that has been extended through the 2025-2026 season.
The 2006 inaugural game saw the
San Jose State Spartans
defeat the New Mexico Lobos with a score of 20-12. In 2013, the
Colorado State Rams
beat the Washington State Cougars 48-45 to become a two-time winner of the bowl trophy. The Rams had previously edged out Fresno State 40-35 to become the 2008 champions. The 2018 matchup was North Texas versus
Utah State
, with the latter team claiming a 52-13 victory. The 2019 matchup will see a team from MWC play a C-USA challenger and is scheduled to take place in December 2019. Other teams who have played in the New Mexico Bowl include BYU and Temple University.
