The history of the University of Nebraska football team dates back to 1890 when they were originally known as the Old Gold Knights. The team would not adopt the name Cornhuskers until 1900. In the 1960s, head coach Bob Devaney built Nebraska into a national powerhouse. The team won four Orange Bowls and two national championships during his tenure. That set the stage for the success of Tom Osborne, who coached the team between 1973 and 1997. He coached the team to 13 conference championships and three national championships. Nebraska has switched conferences several times over its history. The school became a member of the Big Six conference, later called the Big Eight conference, in 1928. Following the dissolution of the conference, it joined the Big 12 in 1996 and then became a member of the Big Ten in 2011. The University of Nebraska campus has several activities for fans. Around 2.5 hours before the start of the game, fans can greet the team as it enters the stadium during the Unity Walk. Fans can also visit the Husker Nation Pavilion for food and entertainment or listen to the marching band play outside of the Kimball Recital Hall. All home games open with a tunnel walk as the team takes the field. Another important tradition is the balloon release in which fans release thousands of balloons after the first scored points.
Tailgating is permitted on most lots around the stadium, beginning six hours before kickoff. Fans are expected to abide by the school’s tailgating policies. Alcohol is prohibited on campus grounds. Open flames are not allowed in parking garages, and RVs are only allowed with a membership to the Athletic Department Donor Club. If you don’t want to bring your own equipment, then you can still tailgate at one of the numerous locations around the area, including the Husker Nation Pavilion.

Before joining the Big Ten, Nebraska shared major rivalries with Oklahoma, Missouri, Texas, and Colorado. Nebraska and Oklahoma have played more than 80 times. Since joining the Big Ten, Nebraska has started new rivalries with Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Though Nebraska and Iowa had previously played 41 times between 1891 and 2010, they only began competing for the Heroes Trophy in 2011. Nebraska and Minnesota had likewise played on 51 occasions before joining the Big Ten. The Nebraska and Wisconsin rivalry is relatively new. The two teams had only met on five occasions before 2011. The winner of the game receives the Freedom Trophy.
