Linguistics don’t often play a major role in theater productions, but “My Fair Lady” is unique in that regard. Now considered a classic and one of the finest Broadway comedies in history, these truly original and thoroughly enjoyable performance touches on themes of class difference, love, proper grammar and, of course, music.
Based on George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion,” the story centers on a stuffy academic who studies phonetics and Cockney flower girl he runs into on the street one day. In her ragged clothes and rough, gutter language, he finds his perfect “project”: He will turn her into a proper woman, presentable to the upper class of Englishmen. But as their lessons go on, their hearts get in the way.
As so many love stories do, “My Fair Lady” explores a romance that blooms between two people of very distinct and separate classes. The songs have been favorites for decades.
