The Montana Grizzlies team had its first football season in 1897. During this time, the team tended to play only against other teams for Montana, and the Grizzlies won the team's first game against
Montana State
, setting things up for a future rivalry. Montana helped to found an intercollegiate conference in 1902, but the Grizzlies would not win against a conference opponent until playing a perfect game against
Washington State
in 1914. Montana joined the now-defunct Pacific Coast Conference in 1924. The Montana Grizzlies had some tough years for a time, but things turned around with the help of new coach Doug Fessenden in 1935. Fessenden was the first coach in the team's history to last more than five years. After Fessenden's departure, Jack Swarthout coached them to undefeated seasons in 1969 and 1970. Swarthout is still credited as being the one to turn Montana around and make the Grizzlies a winning team. Grab your tickets to the next Montana Grizzlies game at StubHub.

The Montana Grizzlies team calls
Washington—Grizzly Stadium
home. This stadium was built in 1986 and can house around 25,000 fans. However, the venue has seen a record attendance of more than 26,000 fans. The construction or renovations to the stadium all seem to follow the recent successes that the team has had on the field. The stadium remains the largest all-purpose venue in the state of Montana, but football fans know it primarily as the home field of the Grizzlies.
''The current head coach for the team is Bobby Hauck. This is Hauck's second run as a coach for the Grizzlies. He also coached the team during the 2003–2009 football seasons. He returned to his position as head coach in 2018. Three others served as coaches in the interim. Unlike many college ball coaches, Hauck did not play football during his time at school. He was instead a member of the track team before turning to coaching.'

Furman Paladins
.

The main rival of Montana is Montana State. This competition goes back decades, and the series between the two teams has been played more than 100 times. Both teams are charter members of the
Big Sky Conference
to which they still belong. From 1986 to 2001, Montana had a winning streak over Montana State, taking home 16 wins in a row.
''The Montana Grizzlies finished the 2018 season with an overall record of 6–5 and a 4–4 record at the conference level.'
