Technically stylizing its name as moe. with a lowercase M and a period, the band known more simply as just Moe is one of the quintessential American rock and roll jam bands. Formed in 1989 by then-students at the University of Buffalo, Moe released its debut album in 1992 and almost instantly branded itself as one of the improv rock and jam band culture's core figures. Known for its frequent appearances at music festivals, Moe has partnered and played with an abundance of other popular artists and bands over the years, including
The Allman Brothers Band
,
The Who
, saxophonist
David Sanborn
,
Trey Anastasio,
from
Phish
and
John Medeski
from
Medeski, Martin and Wood
, to name just a few.
''
Moe is always finding new and innovative ways to bring music to fans. Moe celebrated the millennial new year with Moe.lennium, a three-day gig at Poughkeepsie, N.Y.'s
The Chance
. At one special Moe event, Snow.down in 2006, held at Lake Placid, N.Y.'s
Olympic Center
, fans were invited to ice skate while enjoying the performance. In 2004 and again in 2007, Moe headlined a cruise, performing almost every night along the way. Moe has also played numerous fundraising and benefit concert events.

'The current members of Moe are Rob Derhak on bass and vocals; Chuck Garvey on guitar and vocals; Al Schnier on keyboards, guitar, mandolin and vocals; Vinny Amico on drums and Jim Loughlin on percussion, drums, acoustic guitar, piccolo bass, flute and washboard, MalletKat and other instruments.'
'The main thing you can count on from a Moe concert is that it will be unique even in comparison to other Moe shows. That's because the main thrust of the band in performance is improvisation. The familiar singles Moe may play from its albums seem only inspirations, starting points or leitmotifs for the spontaneous improvisations taking place on stage. Band members attest to drawing from the history of rock and roll when culling elements for these improvs, all filtered through a sense of humor and a desire to push the envelope of the expectations of music.'
'
Moe has a lot of music to choose from when picking songs to spur their live improvs, including its 11 studio albums (in order of release):
Fatboy
,
Headseed
,
No Doy
,
Tin Cans and Car Tires
,
Dither
,
Season's Greetings from Moe
,
Wormwood
,
The Conch
,
Sticks and Stones
,
What Happened to the La Las
and
No Guts, No Glory
.
''While Moe's mainstay is improvisation, it has still managed to release many popular singles off which its famous improvs are sprung. Some that may make a presence at any given Moe show include Kyles Song, Recreational Chemistry, Rebubula, Happy Hour Hero and Blue Jeans Pizza.'
'
Moe is a common a fixture at many annual festivals, like the Further Festival,
High Sierra Music Festival
,
New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival
,
Beale Street Music Festival
,
Lollapalooza
, Jam Cruise and
Bonnaroo Music Festival
, where it has taken the stage five times, among many others. What's more, Moe has organized and cosponsored many festivals of its own, including Moe.down, held semi-annually at Turin, NY's Snow Ridge Ski Area and the Summer Camp Music Festival at Chillicothe, Ill.'s Three Sisters Park. In addition to its festival performances, Moe can also be seen on its own tours playing on stages like the Rockland Trust Bank Pavilion in Boston, Mass., Buckland Theatre in Atlanta, Ga., Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville, Va. and Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colo.
''
Moe is similar in style and sound to other popular rock and roll jam bands like
Widespread Panic
,
Phish
and The Grateful Dead.
