'Lila Down's background'

'

The daughter of a Mexican mother and an American father, Ana Lila Sanchez Downs spent her childhood in both Oaxaca and Minnesota. She later lived in Los Angeles after her parents separated. Experiencing something of a personal crisis, she dropped out of school and turned her back on her Mexican roots. Downs would resume her education several years afterward at the University of Minnesota, where her father was a professor, eventually earning a degree in cultural anthropology and classical voice. She went on to attend the Institute of Science and Arts of Oaxaca.

After reconnecting with her Mexican heritage, Downs moved to her mother's village in Oaxaca and began writing music. She met her future husband, jazz pianist Paul Cohen, and together they created her first album, 1994's Ofrenda. The album Azulao: En Vivo con Lila Downs (1996) would be her first live session.

In 1999, Downs signed with Narada Productions and released her third album, the one to launch her fame: La Sandunga. She has released numerous albums since, such as Tree of Life/Yutu Tata, Border/La Linea, Pecados y Milagros and Balas y Chocolate.
