'Led by Joseph Shabalala, the a cappella group Ladysmith Black Mambazo has been inspiring fans with their rhythmic South African sounds for more than five decades. 'Ladysmith Black Mambazo's background'

'

Ladysmith Black Mambazo's name is a nod to its South African heritage. Ladysmith is the name of Shabala's hometown; Black stands for the strength of the oxen found in the region; and Mambazo is a Zulu word that means chopping axe, symbolic of the group's strength.

The group got its start singing in competitions in South Africa, and they quickly became an international phenomenon. They record many of their albums in the studio, where they consider entertaining audiences just as important as preserving their musical heritage. Their songs grew out of a musical tradition called isicathamiya, a tradition that began with the people of South Africa after they traveled far from their homes to work in the mines. The miners sang songs for entertainment during the six-day work weeks; then they brought the music home with them when they returned to their homeland.
