Born in 1961, in Harlem, N.Y., Keith Douglas Sweat worked his way up through a series of increasingly lucrative jobs. His start in music came in 1975 when he joined the Harlem band Jamilah and got his first taste of touring, covering the tri-state area of New Jersey, Connecticut and New York. In 1984, Keith left the group to pursue his career as a solo artist. He started performing throughout the New York City nightclub scene, eventually getting the opportunity to record the single My Mind Is Made Up. Keith Sweat is also named as the co-producer and co-writer of You Are The One For Me, an earlier release by the same label and the final recording of the band GQ. Several years later, in 1987, Keith Sweat signed with a new label and released his solo debut album,

Make It Last Forever

. The album went on to sell 3 million copies and included the No. 1 hit on the R&B chart and No. 5 on the pop chart, I Want Her. Keith Sweat's subsequent albums were met with similar acclaim.
