'One of the most popular rock and roll bands of the late '70s, Kansas got its start in the American heartland of Topeka, Kan., in 1970. The original band was comprised of guitarist Kerry Livgren, bassist Dave Hope and drummer Phil Ehart. After many permutations back and forth between another band, White Clover, the group eventually coalesced into Kansas with Ehart, Hope, Livgren, Steve Walsh, Robby Steinhardt and Rich Williams. Kansas is known for its distinctive mix of boogie and progressive rock. Fans everywhere are familiar with its iconic songs from the '70s like Carry On Wayward Son, Dust in the Wind and Hold On.'

Kansas released its first album,
Kansas
, in 1974. The band's sound was a blend of symphonic arrangements and American boogie, interlaced with changing time signatures and a rocking violin. This sound wasn't accepted widely at first, but due to relentless touring by the band following its first and subsequent albums, Kansas gathered a growing number of fans. Its fourth album,
Leftoverture
, in 1976, produced the hit single Carry On Wayward Son. The band's next album,
Point of No Return
, featured two hit singles, Point of Know Return and Dust in the Wind.
Leftoverture
topped at No. 5 on the
Billboard
chart, while
Point of Know Return
hit No. 4. After Hope and Livgren became Christians, the band started to have creative differences over the music and eventually disbanded. Kansas began working together again in the late '90s, and it released
Somewhere to Elsewhere
in 2000, featuring all the original members of the band.

'The current Kansas band is made up of some original and former members, along with a few newcomers to the group. Each performance features a good range of its classic hits and its newer songs. Sometimes, Kansas opens its shows with an acoustic instrumental performance while people are being seated. Afterward, it takes up its preferred traditional positions and starts playing fan favorites.'
