About Joe Ely

Hailing from small town Texas, Ely grew up in the Lubbock area, developing a deep appreciation for music from a young age. His earliest forays into the mainstream music world would come in his early 20s, with the formation of a local music group the Flatlanders, featuring Joe alongside friends and collaborators Butch Hancock and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Joe's early years on the scene would see him under the tutelage of Gilmore and Hancock, with the Flatlanders creating a dynamic mixture of folk, rock, and country sounds that captures the ears and hearts of music lovers all across North America. The band released just one album during their early years in 1972, with each member splintering off shortly afterwards to pursue their own respective music careers.

Joe would stay vigilant on the music scene, dropping his own self titled LP in 1977 as he began touring all throughout the USA, Mexico, Canada, and Europe. Ely became known for frequent collaborations and a near constant tour schedule, with him releasing a steady stream of hit albums throughout the following three decades, with him spending most of his time recording and releasing with the MCA Record label. Joe began to enlist a regular lineup of musicians, dubbed the Joe Ely Band, with the band's reputation spreading out all across the land as they became one of the most institutional country rock outfits of their generation.

As the years wore on, Ely, Jimmie Gilmore, and Butch Hancock would reunite in the early 00s, hitting the tour road and recording a slew of tracks that culminated in the release of the band's sophomore album in 2002 and their third full length in 2004. Ely how now branched into the business and writing world, starting his own music label titled Rack 'Em Records and putting out his very own literary work, Bonfire of Roadmaps. Today, Joe continues to hold a position at the forefront of the country scene as he releases a steady stream of hits both as as solo artist and as one third of the still reunited Flatlanders.

While playing shows across the UK, Joe would form a close friendship with the members of seminal punk outfit the Clash. Joe would tour across two continents with the band, and even planned to record an album with Joe Strummer before his untimely death.
