Jay Leno was born in New Rochelle, New York and moved to Andover, Massachusetts along with his family while still a young child. Leno fell in love with comedy at an early age and loved to entertain his peers with pranks and practical jokes. A fifth-grade teacher was not too happy with his antics and once wrote on his report card that he should spend as much time on his studies as he spends trying to be a comedian. He later developed an interest in performing stand-up for crowds and started a comedy club while in college. Leno moved to Los Angeles after his college graduation and continued his pursuit of a career in comedy. He spent time opening shoes for Tom Jones and Johnny Mathis. Leno appeared on the

The Tonight Show

in 1977. Throughout the late 1970s, he was able to land a number of small television roles including an episode of

Good Times

and the pilot episode of

Holmes & Yo-Yo

. Leno continued to work in television and deliver live performances until he became a regular substitute on

The Tonight Show

in 1986.
