The University of Idaho Vandals have over 126 years of football history, having played their first game in 1893. Idaho's football team plays its home games at the
Kibbie Dome
in Moscow, Idaho, which seats 16,000 fans and has been called one of the most unusual stadium in college football due to its architecture. Idaho fans pack the stadium for games to cheer on the home team, which competed in national semifinal games in 1988 and 1993 and had 11 playoff runs in Division I-AA. The team has been a member of many conferences over the years, including the Big West, Sun Belt and Big Sky. Before rejoining the Big Sky Conference in 2018, the Idaho Vandals were a Division I-A (FBS) team for 22 seasons. The team was the first program in the NCAA to voluntarily leave the FBS to return to the FCS. The current head coach of the Idaho Vandals football team is Paul Petrino. A former quarterback player at Carroll College, he moved into coaching shortly after his graduation. For Petrino, football was in his genes; his father was the head coach at Carroll for 27 years. After serving as an assistant coach there, he moved to several schools as an assistant coach. In 2007, he worked with the NFL's Arizona Falcons to coach wide receivers. In 2006, Petrino was a finalist for the Broyles Award for the top assistant coach in college football while he was working with the
Louisville Cardinals
. He was named head coach of the Idaho Vandals in 2013. In 2016, he won the Sun Belt Coach of the Year Award for boosting the program from a 4-8 record to an 8-4 record.
''While the Idaho Vandals have not won any national football championships, they have won 10 conference titles. Nine of their conference titles came as part of the Big Sky Conference. These were in 1965, 1968, 1971, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1992 and 1998. The Idaho Vandals football program led the Pacific Coast Conference in 1927.'

Two of the Idaho Vandals' football rivals are fellow in-state teams. The
Boise State Broncos
are rivals of the Vandals, and the two teams played every year between 1971 and 2010. Boise State currently leads the rivalry statistics. Since 2011, when Boise State moved to the Mountain West Conference, the teams have not met in an out-of-conference game. The Vandals are also rivals in the Battle of the Domes with the Idaho State University Bengals. Here, the Vandals lead the series, which was most competitive in the 1970s and 1980s. The teams had a 10-year break between 2008 and 2018 but met again in 2018 when Idaho rejoined the FCS and the Big Sky Conference.

. In 1998, the Vandals defeated Southern Miss. They beat Bowling Green in the 2009 bowl. In 2016, the Vandals overcame Colorado State 61-50.
