The Houston Cougars football team was established in 1946. The team originally played its games on campus in Robertson Stadium until it was demolished, rebuilt and branded in 2014 as TDECU Stadium where the home games are now hosted. Although the team has played for multiple conferences throughout the years, it finally found a fit with the American Athletic Conference where it consistently delivers impressive seasons with a talented team of up-and-coming athletes. For a fairly fresh team in the NCAA, the squad has already accumulated an impressive 400 all-time wins, and that number only continues to grow as the seasons pass by. Since the team's formation, it has won 11 conference championships, six of them being outright titles. The team has also seen several of its players and coaches inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, and many have taken home national wins for coveted awards. Wilson Whitley was the first Houston Cougar to win a trophy in 1976 when he took home the Lombardi Award. David Klingler, Andre Ware and Ed Oliver are just a few of the players who have also won prestigious awards during their time with the Houston Cougars. The
Rice Owls
football team, also located in Houston, stands as Houston's primary rival and has been ever since it played its first practice game against the Cougars in 1946. Purchase Houston Cougars football tickets at StubHub.
The team will kick off its 2019 season at the
Oklahoma Sooners
on the first Sunday of September. The squad is scheduled to play every weekend until the last weekend in November.
Houston Cougars games are held at TDECU Stadium when the team plays at home. Of course, the team also travels throughout its division to compete against its opponents, which will lead it out of state at times.
TDECU Stadium has a seating capacity that will accommodate up to 40,000 people, but the stadium is also equipped to offer standing room only spots for overflow. In 2016, the stadium saw a record turnout of 42,822 fans for the game against Louisville.
Wilson Whitley won the Lombardi Award in 1976 and was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2007. Andre Ware is one of the most well-known Cougars because of his Heisman Award win in 1989, which followed a successful season in which Ware threw for 44 touchdowns. Andrew Ware, along with coaches Jack Pardee and Bill Yeoman, was also inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. David Klingler set all kinds of records as a Cougar and was a Heisman finalist in 1990.
Tailgating is a college football staple, and Houston Cougar games at TDECU Stadium boast some impressive accommodations. Fans can purchase a Red Zone package to head into the Houston Football Indoor Practice facility for a climate-controlled, premium fan experience. Exciting pregame displays include the Spirit of Houston and Cage Sway, which includes the members of the Houston Cougars team. If you can handle the heat, you will be permitted to enter the lots four hours prior to kickoff to host your own personal tailgating event with family and friends.
