If you claim that Frankie Avalon was a crucial figure of '50s rock n' roll in the presence of any serious rock n' roll fan, you risk an argument. Avalon would be the O.G. of manufactured teen idols, appearing before several other pretenders who paraded around in tight black pants and red sweaters while Elvis took a hiatus in Germany. In the late '50s and early '60s, post-Twist and pre-Beatles, countless fresh-faced lads were mushrooming in the absence of Elvis. Avalon, however, had real musical training to back up his nice looks. His four-year domination of the charts would end in 1962, but his musical career was far from over. Collaborating with Annette Funicello, he reinvented himself as a clean cut, pretty surfer boy in a string of successful beach movies that ensured his relevancy throughout the '60s, in this way doing a lot better than his peers. The movies were such a hit that they earned Funicello and Avalon a revival with the '80s flick Back to the Beach. Avalon was, however, a musician at heart, and insisted that surf legend and original cast mate Dick Dale join in on this reboot.
Fabian rose to stardom in the late '50s due to a number of appearances on the Dick Clark show American Bandstand. Fabian was a modish pretty boy with a smattering of rock n' roll, and he became one of the top teen idols of the era. Luckily, he was supported by the first rate songwriting team of Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, who wrote Fabian smashes such as Hound Dog Man, I'm a Man, and Turn Me Loose, just to name a few. His success would stall in 1959 after the release of Tiger, a platinum-certified single. After, he would fight tooth and nail to become a film star. Unluckily, Congress nailed him as one of the entertainers who had benefitted from payola, landing an almost deadly blow on his weakening career. Under questioning, the singer admitted that his records had been seriously doctored electronically to enhance the sound of his voice. After this gruelling publicity, he would manage to land lead roles in some '60s films. He failed, however, to regain his peak fan base.
At his peak, Bobby Rydell was one of the most well-known nightclub and concert entertainers in the United States. His career in the entertainment scene began at a mere four years of age. In the '60s, his singles Wild One and Volare and his role in Bye Bye Birdie would make him one of the most popular acts in show business. He would capitalize on his skills as an impersonator and drummer to pursue a musical, instead of an acting, career. Rydell was born Robert Ridarelli in Philadelphia. His father would encourage him to pursue performance. As a toddler, young Bobby impersonated the people on the television, such as Milton Berle, Johnny Ray, and Louis Prima. He idolised Gene Krupa and began playing the drums at the age of six. At the age of seven, his father pushed him to begin performing in nightclubs in Philadelphia. Together with Frankie Avalon and Fabian, Bobby Rydell is celebrated as a Philly teen idol due to his impressive musical skill as well as his fresh-faced good looks.
Frankie Avalon's best-known songs include 1958's Ginger Bread and 1959's Why, A Boy Without A Girl, Venus, Bobby Sox to Stockings, and Just Ask Your Heart. Fabian's most successful tunes are 1959's Tiger, Turn Me Loose, and Hound Dog Man. Bobby Rydell would make a name for himself with 1959's We Got Love, 1960's Swingin' School, Wild One, and Volare, 1962's The Cha-Cha-Cha, and 1964's Forget Him.
These days, Frankie Avalon gets some extra income on home shopping channels selling analgesics, as well as performing with the Golden Boys alongside Bobby Rydell and Fabian.
