The Florida Atlantic University Owls football team is a relative newcomer to college football competition. Founded in 2001, the Owls have developed a strong fanbase throughout Florida in the decades that have followed. The team was launched by coach Howard Schnellenberger, who served in the position for 10 seasons before his retirement. He launched the FAU football program after serving as head coach for the
Miami Hurricanes
and the
Louisville Cardinals
. The team was an independent in the NCAA's Division I-AA for its first four years before moving to Division I-A. First, the Owls joined the Sun Belt Conference, where the team won a conference title in 2007. In the 2013-2014 season, however, the FAU Owls moved to Conference USA, where the team is part of the East division. From its earliest days, the Owls aimed to compete against the best teams possible in order to move into a higher division of competition. After Schnellenberger's retirement, three more head coaches helped the team. Today, Lane Kiffin is spurring the Florida Atlantic University Owls on to greater football accomplishments. Lane Kiffin is the head coach of the FAU Owls. His hiring was announced on December 12, 2016, after the previous coach, Charlie Partridge, was let go. Prior to coming to Florida Atlantic, Kiffin was the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Between 2008 and 2009, he was the head coach for the
Oakland Raiders
of the NFL. Kiffin has seen strong results, taking home a conference championship in 2017 and leading the Owls to an undefeated 8-0 conference record that same year.
The Florida Atlantic University Owls football team competes at FAU Stadium, which holds 29,419 fans. With the great weather at
FAU Stadium
, it's also a great place to enjoy tailgating. Students who want to tailgate can participate in the dedicated area called the Rat's Mouth. In addition, around an hour and a half before every home game, the Owl Rally kicks off to pump up team spirit and enthusiasm among the fans.
Since its founding, the Florida Atlantic University Owls have competed in three bowl games and taken home the victory in all three. In 2007, the team played in the New Orleans Bowl against the Memphis Tigers. The Owls defeated the Tigers 44-27. In 2008, the FAU Owls journeyed to the Motor City Bowl, where they defeated the Central Michigan Chippewas in a 24-21 victory. After a break, the Owls returned to bowl games in 2017 under Lane Kiffin. The team defeated the Akron Zips in a 50-3 blowout in the Boca Raton Bowl.
The biggest football rival for the FAU Owls is the
Florida International University Panthers
football team. The two teams meet every year in a game called the Shula Bowl, named after Don Shula, the former head coach of the Miami Dolphins. The game has been played annually since 2002. The winner takes home the Don Shula Award, and the game location shifts back and forth between Boca Raton and Miami. The Owls lead the matchup, 12-4. In the last Shula Bowl, the Owls defeated the Panthers in a 49-14 victory in 2018.
