The East Carolina Pirates is a member of the American Athletic Conference in the East Division. The Pirates has been in the AAC since 2014. From 1997 to 2013, the Pirates was a member of Conference USA. The Pirates was part of the Southern Conference between 1965 and 1976, and it was included in the North State Conference between 1947 and 1961.
The Pirates won its first championship as a member of the North State Conference in 1953 under the leadership of coach Jack Boone. The Pirates went on to win four championships as a member of the Southern Conference. In 2008 and 2009, the Pirates won two more conference championships while working with head coach Skip Holtz.

Marshall Thundering Herd
. On November 14, 1970, all members of the Thundering Herd were killed in a plane crash on the way back from a game at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. This tragic incident caused the two teams to form a deep bond. The Pirates placed a memorial plaque at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, and the rivalry is one of the friendliest in college football. The Pirates also has rivalries with the NC State Wolfpack and the UCF Knights.
