The Duquesne Dukes have long been a big name in the world of football. The school's first football program started in 1891. It was an innovative team, developing home and away jerseys as well as hand signals that could be used by officials. There was a gap for almost 20 years in the football program's history. However, the school has had a football team continuously since 1969, when student-athletes re-formed a club team. The team rejoined the NCAA in 1979 as a Division III team. Early in its history, the Dukes were a storied team. Greats included Art Rooney, who eventually founded the Pittsburgh Steelers. Duquesne alum, Ray Kemp, went on to become one of the first African American players in the NFL. The Dukes were a successful, nationally-famous football team early in its existence, winning the 1934 Festival of Palms Bowl and the 1937 Orange Bowl. Since college football's division into conferences, the Dukes have won or shared 16 conference titles. The Dukes have not been invited to a major bowl game since the 1930s. StubHub is a great place to find tickets for Duquesne Dukes football, whether the team is playing at home or on the road.
The Dukes are led by Jerry Schmitt. He's been at Duquesne since 2015. Before that, Schmitt coached at Westminster College, where he also played football. His coaching record at Duquesne is 92 wins and 62 losses. His record against in-conference teams is 52 wins and 33 losses.
Duquesne has played in the Northeast Conference since 2008. Prior to that, the Dukes played in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Duquesne's record was 9 wins and 4 losses in 2018.
NCAA football's championship system has always been confusing. Typically, the championship has been decided by sportswriters, not wins or losses. The Dukes have claimed three national titles, in 1941, 1973 and 2003. The 1973 championship was for club football. At the time, Duquesne did not have an NCAA team.
The Duquesne Dukes play at
Arthur J Rooney Athletic Field
. Named for Duquesne alumnus and Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney, the field seats 2,200 people. Duquesne's campus is urban, which made any stadium a tight fit. The Dukes were not able to play games on campus from 1929 to 1993. Recent renovations cut the seating capacity at Rooney Field from 4,500 to 2,200. Renovations that will expand seating are already being discussed.
In the modern era, Duquesne hasn't really established any rivalries yet. On the basketball side, the Dukes have a rivalry with the
University of Pittsburgh
and play annually in the City Game.
Duquesne went 9-4 overall in 2018, and 5-1 in-conference. The team lost to the UMASS Minutemen in its first-ever meeting. The Dukes made the playoffs, defeating Towson in the first round. The team bowed out after a defeat to
South Dakota State
. The Dukes ended the season ranked at No. 21 in the STATS FCS poll. The Coaches poll ranked the Dukes at No. 24.
Duquesne's urban location poses some problems when it comes to traditional tailgate parties. The university hosts a tailgate in the west side endzone an hour prior to each game. There's also tailgating in a grassy area by Rooney field.
