Diego el Cigala was born Diego Ramon Jimenez Salazar in Madrid, Spain in 1968. He grew up performing in the El Rastro district of Madrid and performed in the local markets. Madrid, the flamenco capital of Spain in the 1970s fueled his love for the musical style.
He goes by El Cigala, which is Spanish for Norway Lobster and claims he received the nickname from some of his guitar players for being very thin in his younger days. Growing up, he was very popular with the flamenco dancers, and his voice was used in the studio recordings of some of flamenco’s greatest guitarists including Tomatito and Vicente Amigo.
Diego el Cigala has put out eight full-length albums. In 1998, he debuted his first solo album, Undebel and manages to put out a new album every few years. One of his most critically acclaimed albums is Lagrimas Negras, released in 2003. This album was a collaboration with then 85-year old Cuban pianist Bebo Valdes, and fused Cuban rhythms and flamenco vocals. Bebo passed away in 2013.

Diego el Cigala is a nephew of legend Spanish music and film star, Rafael Farina.
At age 12, el Cigala won a local flamenco competition and the Gente Joven prize in a television contest.
His 2003 album Lagrimas Negras (recorded with Bebo Caldes) put Diego el Cigala first in a New York Times listing of the best albums of the year.
