Formed in 1992, this Stockbridge, Ga., band released its debut album,

Things Left Unsaid: Collective Soul's Rise to Stardom

Lead vocalist Ed Roland was heavily involved in the underground music scene of Atlanta. He also worked at the Real 2 Reel Studios in Stockbridge as a producer and an engineer. He formed Marching Two-Step with drummer Shane Evans. The band managed to play a few local gigs, but the group never found much success outside of Atlanta's club scene. By 1993, Roland changed the name of the band to Collective Soul as a nod to a phrase from the Ayn Rand book,

The Fountainhead

. During this time, Roland also wanted to record a demo for his group. A local radio station heard Shine and immediately added it to the rotation. The song was a hit, and it would soon be one of the most requested songs at the station. Roland saw the need to perform live shows, and he enlisted the help of Will Turpin, Shane Evans, Dean Roland and Ross Childress. Once Atlantic Records heard the band, the label signed Collective Soul to a contract and re-released

Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid

in 1993. With the album, the band gained an international reputation as it went to double-platinum status with the RIAA. Collective Soul was invited to perform at Woodstock '94 and throughout North America. The following year, the self-titled album was certified triple platinum by the RIAA and had a 76-week run on the

Billboard

200. Since that time, the band has released eight additional studio albums and continued to tour across North America. The band was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in September 2009.
