The Calgary Stampeders, which represent Alberta province in the CFL, have a long history that dates back to 1945. The team was the successor of several previous Calgary teams, including the Tigers in 1909, the Canucks in 1915, the 50th Battalion in 1923, the Altomahs in 1931 and the Bronks in 1935. Following a suspension of play for World War II, the Stampeders franchise was founded in the immediate aftermath of the war. From its first

Grey Cup

victory in 1948, Calgary has won eight national championships, six of which came after 1990. Former Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie led Calgary to victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 24-10 in the 1992 Grey Cup. Flutie received game MVP with an astonishing 480 passing yards, while slotback Dave Sapunjis was named the Top Canadian. The team has also won national titles in 1998, 2001, 2008, 2014 and 2018. The season concluded with a 35-14 loss to Winnipeg in the Western Division semifinal round. The rivalry between Edmonton and Calgary, which stretches over multiple sports, including both football and hockey, is known as the Battle of Alberta.'
