The Bowling Green Falcons began playing football in 1919, a few years after the university was established. The team's beginnings were humble; they played on a local field behind the school. The original team was composed of 19 men, which was more than half of the 36 total students that were enrolled in the school at the time. In 1931, legendary coach Doyt Perry took the head coach position and changed the future of the Bowling Green Falcons. During Perry's career, the Falcons won five Mid-American Conference championships and one NCAA College Division National Championship. His winning percentage as a coach at the end of his career, .855, is in the top five of college football coaches. Notable Bowling Green alumni who have played in the NFL include Shaun Suisham, Teo Redding and Scott Mruczkowski. In addition to conference opponents, Bowling Green plays some of college football's most legendary opponents, including
Notre Dame
,
Ohio State
and

The Falcons play their home games at
Doyt Perry Stadium
, which was opened in 1966 and has a capacity of 23,000 people. The stadium, named after the legendary former head football coach and athletic director, is located in northwestern Ohio. A 2007 renovation installed offices, luxury suites, a new box office and training facilities. The Bowling Green football team has a 126-58-6 record on its home field.
The stadium's parking lots open four hours before each game. Every game day, fans bring their grills and make some of the best tailgating food in Ohio. Bowling Green fans are known to be among the friendliest in college football. They are usually willing to share their food no matter what color you are wearing. Additionally, if you get a good spot on the sidewalk, you can interact with the band, cheerleaders and team members when they walk from the nearby Stroh Center to Doyt Perry Stadium.
Home games for Bowling Green football are incredibly popular. The student section is raucous, and they cheer hard when Bowling Green scores or makes a big play. The weather varies throughout the year. Early games may be played in the heat of late summer and early fall while games in November could be frigid affairs. Games against local rivals Ohio University and Akron usually see fans from the opposing schools make the trip to Bowling Green. School officials advise fans to get to the field early to ensure that they get a good parking spot and tailgate position.
Each season, Bowling Green plays conference opponents the
