Location: Indian Wells, California
Venue: Indian Wells Tennis Garden
The BNP Paribas Open, also known as the Indian Wells Open, is one of the largest and most prestigious tennis tournaments outside of the four majors. Located in the resort community of Indian Wells, just 15 miles southeast of Palm Springs, the tournament is part of the Masters 1000 on the men’s side and the Premier Mandatory on the women’s side. Played annually around March, the BNP Paribas Open consists of a hard court surface. The tournament originally began as a simple ATP fundraising event in Tucson, AZ, before it moved to the Coachella Valley of California in 1976. A decade later, it found a home at the Grand Champions Hotel in Indian Wells. But after quickly outgrowing the grounds, it moved to the newly built Indian Wells Tennis Garden in 2000. Past winners of the tournament have included Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams, Andre Agassi, Martina Hingis, Pete Sampras, Steffi Graf, Boris Becker, Martina Navratilova, Jimmy Connors and more. If you want to experience the thrill of watching some of the top players on the tour, then you can purchase BNP Paribas Open tickets at StubHub, a leading source for live events.
The BNP Paribas Open features a singles draw size of 128. Players are taken from both the main draw and the qualifying draw. The top 32 players are all seeded based on the overall tour rankings. The No. 1 and No. 2 players are placed on opposite ends of the bracket, while the remaining 30 seeds are placed in alternating orders on predetermined lines. Once the main seeds are in place, the remaining players are placed into the bracket by a random drawing, which starts at the top of the bracket and goes down. The tournament then proceeds along a single-elimination format until a champion is determined in the finals. The doubles adhere to a similar single-elimination format, except it consists of 32 teams.
The 2020 BNP Paribas Open schedule is set for March 9th to March 22nd. The qualifying rounds take place during the first two days of the tournament when admission is free to the general public. The main draw begins on March 11th and proceeds through both day and evening sessions. The WTA and ATP doubles finals take place on March 21st, while the tournament wraps up with the WTA and ATP singles finals on March 22nd. If a match is canceled due to weather, then the organizers will try to accommodate ticket holders with a ground pass for a future session.
The 2019 BNP Paribas Open culminated in several upsets. On the men’s side, seven seed Dominic Thiem beat four seed Roger Federer 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. On the women’s side, unseeded Bianca Andreescu beat eight seed Angelique Kerber 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. The doubles champions were Nikola Mektic and Horacio Zeballos on the men’s side and Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka on the women’s side.
The Indian Wells Tennis Garden is a large 189-acre complex that consists of several stadiums and minor courts. The
main stadium
, which seats 16,100 people, is one of the largest tennis stadiums in the world. During the tournament, there is plenty for fans to see and experience at the grounds. Apart from all of the concessions and fine dining, fans can attend the draw party, player autograph signings, talk sessions with players and evening entertainment. All members of the general public can attend the Kids Day for free.
